Evaluation & Diagnosis

Our multi-disciplinary assessment is based upon diagnostic guidelines established by the U.S. government: Institute of Medicine (IOM; 1996) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC: 2004). We also use the University of Washington 4-Digit Code for measuring facial features.
Although many of our cases are in the death penalty context, we do not take a position on the death penalty itself.

Protocol for "rush" cases:

  1. "Rush" is defined as less than 4 months from intake to submission of all reports.
  2. Funding must include 2-4 hours consultation between counsel and our Legal Director to determine if assessments are possible within the given time frame. Judge Wartnik will discuss the team’s “withdrawal protocol” if complete multidisciplinary assessment cannot be finished within the allotted time schedule. (Judge Wartnik’s time is billable only if full FASDExperts assessment is funded.)
  3. Funding must be available for full mitigation.
  4. All members of FASDExperts must agree in advance that they have sufficient time on their schedules for the “rush” case.
